Four things to do in Washington DC

November 1, 2019

Are you in town for the SHRM conference? If so, welcome! We’ve put together some suggestions on what to do while you’re here. CIBT has been in DC since our founding, so we know all the best spots to grab a cup of coffee or to just take a five minute break. Here are four of our suggestions.

Compass Coffee

Located just a short ways away from the conference center, Compass Coffee is a chain exclusive to the DC area. Founded by veterans, this coffee shop serves coffee that is always in season and roasted in their own roaster. Brews are flavorful, but not bitter and if you’re feeling adventurous, they have an espresso cola which is exactly what it sounds like. We recommend the espresso.

U.S. Botanic Garden

After you’re done taking pictures of the Capitol, duck into the building on the right (the one with the greenhouse) and step into a lush world filled with the sound of water. Filled with plants, the U.S. Botanic Garden is the oldest continually operating botanic garden in the country. With over 65,000 plants in the collection, you’re sure to find your favorite.

China Chilcano

Created by one of DC’s best restaurateurs and humanitarian, Jose Andres, this is a great place for dinner. A fusion of Chinese, Japanese and Peruvian cuisine, it honors the groups that make up Peru’s diverse heritage. With friendly staff, excellent service and an interesting menu, you’re sure to find something that will suit your tastes. We recommend the Suspiro Limeña, Peru’s iconic dessert which is made with sweetened condensed milk custard and topped with soft and crunchy meringues and passionfruit sorbet.

John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts

More commonly known as the Kennedy Center, the center is a tribute to President Kennedy’s love for the arts. With over 2,000 performances a year there is always something exciting happening. The center also serves as the official home for the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera.

The center has recently completed its expansion project The Reach, a modern cultural campus and arts incubator. Check out the Gallery Wall which plays host to large-scale art installations on both levels and The River Pavilion which offers wonderful views of the Potomac River. Also wander through the outdoor spaces such as the Reflecting Pool which has views of the Potomac River and Roosevelt Island and the Video Wall Lawn which allows for participatory engagement through broadcast performances.
